South Quad

The campus is composed of a number of complexes centered around courtyards.  The south quad is especially beautiful, full of birds that flit from hibiscus to tall sycamore.  Swallows build their nests in convenient niches and swoop out at dusk.  The photos I'd taken in the past always showed individual buildings, so in returning to take more pictures, I tried to capture the vast quiet of the quad on a Saturday afternoon.

Standing at the southeast corner of the quad, this is part of what you see.  The lawn stretches out quite a distance to the left.  The peaked tower in the background at left leads to the bell tower building's picturesque courtyard.  The many paths in the quad are lined with huge old sycamores.

A view from the northeast corner.

The east wall of the quad, which gives a
distinct feeling of history

Quad detail near the bell tower building on the north wall.  Hibiscus grows between two windows, a signature element of campus flora

The east wall arcade, with its tile roofs and the decorative turret at right, one of many unique and whimsical touches that characterize campus architecture.

One of the many unique tile designs to be found behind drinking fountains.

Another tile pattern, one I have found only at a single drinking fountain in a smaller courtyard.

Listless corner in the south end of the quad,
which is still waiting for updating/refurbishing.

Beyond the courtyard to the east, local hills full of cactus and chaparral surround the campus. Detail of the scene at left, with spring daisies and a bird, barely visible, perched on the yucca at left.
