Camarillo State Hospital

Setting

The old hospital campus is located just outside Camarillo, California, off South Lewis Road, about five miles from the Pacific Ocean at Point Mugu.  A leisurely mile-long drive takes you past lemon orchards, native hillside chaparral and trees on the way to the campus itself.  Below is what the visitor sees along the way.

The Santa Monica mountains rise abruptly from the flatness of the Oxnard plain.  Covered only with scrub vegetation, they turn pastel colors in the late afternoon light.

Looking northeast from the campus toward Camarillo.  This field, as much of the land between the town and the campus, is often planted in vegetable crops.

Sheltered valley where deer often graze at dusk.  The palm trees may indicate that a house stood on this spot at one time.

Whimsical rock formations jut from the hillside at the edge of the campus.  The road passes by the sycamores in mid-photo.

Sycamore woods along the roadside
leading to the campus.

Valley and volcanic peaks as they appeared
until recently.  A road now cuts through
this pass to access the new east campus.

Native cactus that dots the hillsides,
adding a colorful accent to the landscape.
