December Hike - Page 2

Beyond the visitor center, the trails start
up gentle slopes which soon turn into much
steeper climbs.  This particular trail over
the first ridge features stairs.

Grain on the slopes above the visitor center dries in the winter sun.  At one time this area was used for grazing cattle and for the growing of barley but the land, now federally protected, is gradually returning to its native state.

Cactus is another native inhabitant found scattered throughout these hills.  The fruits of this cactus are mild-flavored and sweet... but beware the spines!  Unless you've brought gloves or tongs to pick them with, they're better left alone.

As the trail rounds the edge of the first ridge, the hiker is treated to this view of Sycamore Canyon, looking toward the ocean.  A bike trail leads down the canyon and emerges at the Sycamore Canyon campground, across the PCH from Sycamore Cove (beach tour here.)
